Diagnosis for Conjunctivitis can be confirmed by a physical examination however blood tests may also be taken if the animal is suffering from any other symptoms. Several tests are usually carried out by a veterinary surgeon and can confirm a  diagnosis of conjunctivitis and eliminate another eye condition:

  • Canine Conjunctivitis treatment - Fluorescein Staining - This test uses an orange dye (fluorescein) and a blue light to detect damage or ulcers on the cornea. It is also used to detect foreign bodies in the eye which could be causing redness and discomfort and to detect if the tear ducts are functioning correctly. A dye soaked piece of paper is placed near the eye and causes the dog to blink. The dye will then spread around the eye. A blue light is then used to detect any problems with the cornea, any damaged areas or foreign objects will display as green under the blue light.
  • Canine Conjunctivitis treatment - Schirmer Tear Test - This test is often used to determine if the dog is producing sufficient tears. Not producing enough tears can cause redness and other eye problems. The test is performed by placing a piece of filter paper in the eye for one minute. The amount of tears produced are displayed on the filter paper and the results are available immediately.
  • Canine Conjunctivitis treatment - Tonometry Test - This test measures the fluid pressure inside the eye and is used to diagnose Glaucoma.
  • Canine Conjunctivitis treatment - If a diagnosis of conjunctivitis is confirmed the usual method of treatment is with antibiotic eye drops administered as directed by your Vet or Canine health care professional.
