Dogs Symptoms and Canine Health - Description of Dog Parvo

Description of Dog Parvo. The definition of Dog Parvo is a highly contagious disease, characterized by bloody diarrhoea, which can prove fatal.  The word parvo comes from the Latin word 'parvus' which means small. Small refers to the size of the virus and not how damaging it can be to unvaccinated dogs.

There are several variations of the disease but it is most often referred to as CPV-2 (Canine Parvo Virus - variation 2). CPV-2a and CPV-2b are subtypes of the virus. Disease is spread through either the mouth or nose coming into contact with infected faeces.

Dogs Symptoms and Canine Health - Dog Parvo - General Canine Observations
When you are worried about your pet dogs or puppies it is wise to make general observations and a note of your dog's general well-being before considering a health issue and problem such as Dog Parvo. Overall physical condition? Mental attitude? Appetite? Condition of bowels and urinary apparatus? The nose of healthy dogs or puppies is moist and cool but in sick dogs it is usually hot and dry. Hair loss? Dry skin? Discharges? These general observations are useful to consider whilst checking out the symptoms of Dog Parvo.

There are two forms of Dog Parvo, Cardiac and Intestinal.

Intestinal Parvo symptoms are severe vomiting and diarrhoea. The intestinal form of this disease is spread through ingestion of infected soil or faeces. Once ingested, the virus replicates in the lymphoid tissue found in the throat, it then spreads to the bloodstream. Once in the bloodstream the virus begins dividing cells particularly in the lymph nodes, intestine and the bone marrow.

Cardiac Parvo symptoms include respiratory or cardiovascular failure and this form of the virus affects young puppies. Animals become infected in the womb or as new born puppies. The heart muscle is attacked by the virus and the puppy can die suddenly or after a short period of breathing problems.

Canine Parvo Virus can over take a dog within hours of the first symptoms being displayed and it can result in death within 48 -72 hours. Current vaccination programs have helped to control the disease although even dogs who have been vaccinated against Parvo Virus have still contracted the disease.  Canine Parvo Virus (Parvovirus) is usually associated with puppies under 6 months old and the the larger breeds including Rottweilers, Dobermanns and Labradors are more susceptible to this disease.
