Dogs Symptoms and Canine Health - Description of Dog Lupus
Description of Dog Lupus. The definition of Dog Lupus is "Lupus" meaning wolf. The disease causes the body to literally attacks itself and there are two forms of the disease: Systemic Lupus Erythmatosus and Discoid Lupus Erythematosus.

Systemic Lupus Erythematosus - Also referred to as SLE or just Lupus, it is a rare disease of the immune system and is the most serious form of Lupus. The immune system forms antibodies against the nuclear component of its own cells and begins to destroy them. Systemic Lupus Erythematosus can cause a range of side effects including arthritis, kidney disease, skin disease and blood disorders. Both people and dogs can suffer from this disease. Some breeds of dogs are however at increased risk, Collies, German shepherds and Shetland Sheepdogs are more prone to this disease. Systemic Lupus Erythematosus can affect several organs and unlike Discoid Lupus Erythematosus which is the other form of the disease, it can occur to any part of the body.

Discoid Lupus Erythematosus - Also referred to as DLE, it is an autoimmune disorder that causes loss of pigment, erosions, redness, ulcerations and crusting on the nose, face and lips of dogs which eventually develop into sores. Certain breeds are more prone to DLE, these include: German Shepherds, Collies and Siberian Huskies. Unlike Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE) the symptoms of Discoid Lupus Erythematosus are limited to the face and nose in particular. The first sign of this condition is the loss of pigment on the nose followed by the development of sores. Exposure to UV (Ultraviolet light) makes the sores worse so symptoms are often worse in the summer months. Evening walks are recommended for dogs affected with this condition and the use of sunscreen is also recommended.
