Description of Dog Flu. The definition of Dog Flu is Canine influenza which is caused by varieties of the Influenza Zirus A. An example being equine influenza virus H3N8, which was discovered to cause disease in dogs. Unfortunately dogs have no natural immunity to this virus so it can spread rapidly between individual dogs. It is a contagious respiratory infection in all dogs, regardless of their breed or age. The incubation period for H3N8 canine influenza is between 2 and 5 days; most cases will appear within 2 to 3 days.

Dog Flu spreads quickly amongst dogs and there is no evidence to believe the disease can spread to humans or other animals. The disease is highly contagious but has a low mortality rate. Dog Flu is spread by direct contact with respiratory secretions through the air or by contact with contaminated surfaces.  Canine Influenza Virus is also referred to as canine H3N8 virus or Dog Flu, causes flu-like symptoms in dogs including coughing, sneezing and a runny nose.
