Osteosarcoma - (OSA) - (bone cell origin)
OSA is the most common primary bone tumour with approximately 85% of all the bone tumors that occur in limbs. OSA can also occur in the spine, jaw, skull and ribs and there is no known cause. This variant of cancer mainly occurs in large breeds. The majority of dogs that develop OSA are between 1 and 2 years of age or between 7 and 9 years of age. OSA develops deep within the bone and becomes more painful as it grows, gradually destroying the bone from the inside.

Chondrosarcoma  - (CSA) - (cartilage origin)
This variant is the second most common primary bone tumour in dogs and accounts for approximately 10% of all primary bone tumours. It generally occurs on flat bones such as ribs or skull bones, but can occur in the limbs, usually the thigh bone (femur). It is a tumour of the cartilage and tends not to be as malignant as OSA. The symptoms are similar to OSA but most cases can be cured by removal of the tumour.

Fibrosarcoma - (FSA) - (from fibrous tissue)
This is the rarest type of bone cancer and accounts for less than 5% of bone tumours. It occurs mainly in the facial bones, ribs and vertebrae but it can occur in the limbs.

Hemangiosarcoma- (HSA) - (blood vessel origin)
This type of bone cancer is very rare and accounts for less than 5% of bone tumours. It usually affects young dogs and can involve either the limbs or the axial skeleton.
